Bank of America, based in Raleigh, North Carolina, was selected as the world’s top bank in terms of capital strength, followed by JPMorgan. BofA topped the list 40 years ago when the ratings were based on total assets rather than capital.
A large surprise came from the fact that despite all its troubles, Citigroup ranked third on the list. The Royal Bank of Scotland and HSBC came next. 
In terms of profitability (pretax profits), the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) heads the class, just ahead of the China Construction Bank and then Goldman Sachs.
